2009 Junior Division Playoffs

Junior Division Championship Game
Friday, June 12, 2009

  VS.
The 2009 Junior Division Championship featured the #1 seed Red Sox versus the #2 seed Athletics under the lights at Gile Field.  The game featured two of the top pitchers in the league and they pitched like all-stars.  The strong pitching was supported by some great defense including a great fly ball catch by A's outfielder Sara G.  Offensively, the Athletics had solid hitting from Julia N., Allyson, and Shea R.  The Red Sox had solid hits from Jessica O., Shannon F., and Elizabeth M.  In the end, the Red Sox hung on for a 11-6 victory.   Congratulations to the Athletics and the Red Sox for a great game and an outstanding season.

Semifinal Matchups

Semifinal #1

VS.
The 2009 Junior Division Semifinals featured some great match-ups.  The #5 seed Phillies, fresh of a win over the Astros Monday night, faced off against the #1 seed Red Sox. The Red Sox jumped out to an early lead and held on with some solid pitching.  But the Phillies kept it close with some great defense at shortstop and third base.  The defensive play of the game came from the Phillies' catcher.  A Red Sox batter hit a mile-high pop fly behind home plate that was caught by the catcher.  It was textbook.  The Red Sox advance to the Junior Division Championship Game with a 24-8 win.

Semifinal #2
VS.
In the other semifinal, the #2 seed Athletics hosted the #3 seed Angels at Kelly Field.  The Athletics combined stellar defense with another strong pitching performance from the their closer, Jules "Eckersly" N., to defeat the Angels 13-8.  Angels starting pitcher Anne N. and relief pitcher McKenzie D. overcame the lingering after-effects of the Cunningham School graduation celebration earlier in the day, and Maddie B. contributed a strong closing inning, but it just wasn't enough to stem the on-rushing tide of the Athletics' offense.   The Athletics advance to the Junior Championship Game with a 13-8 win.
